By this time

    It is normal if…
  • your baby does not sleep or eat on a schedule
  • your baby wake up 1 to 3 times each night for breast milk or forumal
  • your baby cries — this is how your baby lets you know that he or she needs something

Eating and Pooping

  • Breast milk is the best food for your baby.
  • Breast milk or formula is the only thing that you need to feed your baby
  • Your baby does not need water.
Breast-feeding babies
  • Are usually hungry very 2-3 hours
  • Have watery, loose poop or stool
  • often stool after every feeding
  • At 1 month, some babies have harder stool and don’t stool as many times every day.
Bottle-feeding babies
  • Are usually hungry every 3-4 hours
  • Have harder poop or stool
  • Don’t always stool after every feeding
  • At 1 month, some babies have harder stool and don’t stool as many times every day.

Development and Play

  • You won’t “spoil” your baby if you hold and cuddle him or her a lot.
  • Talk to your baby — this helps a baby learn how to talk
  • Babies like bright colors. You can put a Hanging toy so your baby can see it (on the crib or the infant seat).

Safety

  • Always hold your baby’s head
  • Put your baby on his/her back to sleep
  • Take out fluffy pillows, toys, and blankets from the crib.
  • Onle leave your baby alone in the baby seat on the floor so he/she does’t fall
  • Never leave your baby alone on the bed
  • DO NOT smoke near your baby. Your cigarette smoke can hurt your baby’s lungs and make him/her get sick easier.
  • Always put your baby in a car seat. It’s the LAW!
  • Put the car seat in the back seat of the car.
  • Put the car seat facing backwards.
  • If you have questions about how to put your baby’s car seat in the right way, contact your local fire station.
  • In the summer, protect your baby from the sun.
  • Put a hat and light clothes on your baby.
  • Don’t keep your baby in the sun between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM

Some other hints

  • New mothers need lots of rest. Try to rest whenever your baby is sleeping.
  • If you think that your baby is not well, take your baby’s temperature. Always take your baby’s temperature in his/her bottom (rectum, popo). Call your doctor with any questions.
  • Never give your baby any medicine like Tylenol/Tempra without talking to your baby’s doctor first.
  • You may need to cut your baby’s nails every other day. Buy a pair of little nail clippers at the drugstore.
  • Your baby may sneeze (achoo). It doesn’t mean that the baby has a cold. This is how a baby blows their nose.
  • New babies often get hiccups. It does not hurt them. You do not need to do anything to stop them.
